Bibb Co. School Board reopens bid for kitchen equipment

Bibb Co. Board of Education is allowing companies to submit new bids to construct the kitchen in a new elementary school.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Heard Elementary School is opening in January and it needs kitchen equipment.

Two companies have already placed bids to complete this project.

At first, it seemed like the local company, Direct South, had the lowest estimate.

Bibb Co. School Board member, Lester Miller, said that wasn't the case. A firm from Albany was the lowest bidder.

There's a $9,000 difference between the two estimates.

Board members are consulting with their attorney to see if it is required by law to take the lowest bid.

"I think it could really complicate some problems for us in trying to explain why we did not go with the low bidder," said Dr. Steve Smith, the interim superintendent.

However, Miller believes there are other factors to consider when making this decision.

"The fact that our local company here... They do pay taxes here. They pay our local school taxes as well as property taxes. They do employ people here in Bibb County, but they're also more convenient to the location," said Miller.

Board members hope re-opening the bid process will encourage other companies to submit proposals.

Miller said the board will make sure they're using taxpayers' dollars in the best possible way when making this decision.
