Bears complete third round of two-a-days, prepare for Fan Day

Mercer practiced twice Monday at Mercer University Stadium.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Mercer completed its third round of two-a-days Monday.

It was the Bears' first time on the field since their scrimmage on Saturday.

41NBC spoke with quarterback John Russ following the afternoon session.  The sophomore called Monday's sessions "average," saying the team needs to execute better, but he did point out a few young guys who have impressed him so far.

"Avery Ward, a receiver, is a pretty good player," Russ says.  "And then Jeremy James, a corner, a defensive player.  Just playing against him, he's a really good player. Those two have really stood out as the better freshmen of the group."

Mercer hits the field Tuesday at 3 before another round of two-a-days Wednesday.  A scrimmage is set for Thursday at 7, two weeks from the season opener.

Before Thursday's scrimmage, Fan Day will be held at the stadium.  Players will hand out posters and sign autographs starting at 5:30.

"You've gotta really remember who you're playing for," Russ says.  "You're not just playing for your teammates and your coaches, but you're playing for the fans that come to the game and the students that come to support you.  It's great to have a little autograph session right there and meet them and chat with them a little bit."
