BYRON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man wanted by Byron police for trying to rob a convenience store was caught Friday.
Police arrested Stephen Eugene Wade and charged him attempted armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a felony.
Police say Wade used a rifle when he tried to rob the American Eagle Food Mart on the 247 Connector in Byron on Wednesday.
They found the same rifle in Wade's car during a traffic stop in Byron.
Byron Police Chief Wesley Cannon said Wade confessed that he was the man captured on surveillance video wrestling with the store clerk's husband, Umphria Maston.
Cannon said police conducted an extensive investigation, and named Wade as a suspect within 24 hours of the foiled robbery.
The rifle could be seen going off in the video, but Cannon said they are not sure which man pulled the trigger during the struggle for the rifle.
The police chief said, Wade has a lengthy criminal history and this is the 10th time he has been arrested. Those charges range from possession of drugs to aggravated assault.
Cannon added Wade is now facing felony charges.
