Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder starts June 5

The season begins June 5 and runs through the end of July.
HAMPTON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Visit Atlanta Motor Speedway one Thursday night this summer and you'll be hooked.  At least that's what the drivers say.

"Even if you're not into racing, you'll become a fan by the end of the night," says Taylor Jorgensen.

Taylor and her brother Jensen race in Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder series.  Taylor, who just graduated from high school, has played all kinds of sports, but she says racing is her favorite.

"When you're on the race track, you're the only one you can really depend on, and I really like that," she says.

Taylor races Legends cars.  Jensen, who's 15, races in what's called a Bandolero.   Drivers in that series usually move up to Legends.

"A Legends car is more power," Jensen says.  "Where you've got to be really easy on the throttle so you don't spin the tires or bust loose coming out of the corner."

I got in one of the cars Thursday at a media event and took it for a ride around the quarter-mile oval on the AMS frontstretch.  Jensen was right: the throttle is no joke.  These cars weigh just 1,300 pounds but have 140 horsepower.

"This is where we came from," Jensen says.  "This is where a lot of big NASCAR drivers came from. Chase Elliott [from Dawsonville] is doing amazing in the Nationwide Series. It means a lot to see those guys out there racing big cars like that. Hopefully, I can go out there and maybe beat them one day."

The guys and girls hit the track every Thursday night starting June 5 through the end of July.

It costs just $6 for adults to get in, and for kids 6-11, it's $2.
