Alexander II students participate in first S.T.E.M. Day

Alexander II Math and Science Magnet School hosted science, technology, engineering and math events for its students.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Today, hundreds of students from Alexander ll Math and Science Magnet School participated in S.T.E.M. Day.

School principal Cynthia Canova says it’s the first time the students have been able to participate in a full-scale event like this.

The school partnered with Central High and Miller Middle School students for some of the demonstrations, but Canova added the goal is for students to take leadership roles and present their projects to fellow classmates.

Students placed in a math competition, launched rockets and learned about robotics.

41NBC spoke with third grader Rida Rehan about a rocket she built and launched.

Rehan says her favorite part of S.T.E.M. Day is learning about each of the subjects-science, technology, engineering and math.

Everything is different and you get to do more stuff and you can teachthe whole school what you've learned over the year," says Rehan.

Another student, third grader Quin Wohl, says his favorite part of the day is learning about electromagnetism.

But Wohl didnt believe in getting hands-on with the demonstration.

I almost did, but I didn't want to get electrocuted, says Wohl.

Both Rehan and Wohl say they hope next year the school will host another S.T.E.M. Day.
