41 Book Club Blog: First Thoughts on The Cuckoo's Calling

This month for 41 Book Club, we're reading The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith, better known as J.K. Rowling.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – This month for 41 Book Club, we're reading The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith, better known as J.K. Rowling.

I'm a little more than 100 pages into the novel and I am hooked! Spoiler alert: I'm going to talk about the story, so if you're reading along and aren't as far as me then you may want to hold off on reading this blog post.

The plot got me at the very beginning of the story. We first learn of super model Lula Landry and the fall she took that ended her life in the first few pages. Think of her like any superstar we love, how close we feel to them even though we don't really know them. Her death in the novel was very upsetting for everyone. It reminded me of how upset the world got when Princess Diana died.

But Landry's brother doesn't believe she killed herself. Instead, he thinks she was pushed off the building. This is where private detective Cormoran Strike enters the story. He's an interesting character...very moody, kind of rough, but I think that's because he's got a complicated back story. I know he lost his leg while fighting in Afghanistan and he's not financially stable. Add on top of that, he's girlfriend just dumped him and his business is not doing well.

I think that's why Strike is so eager to investigate this case, even though he doesn't suspect any foul play in Landry's death. He has no other option.

Strike has talked to a few of Landry's acquaintances, the security guard in her building and her limo driver. But nothing major has happened yet to really break the case.

Another character is thrown into the mix. Robin Ellacott is in her mid-twenties and is hired to work as a temporary secretary at Strike's detective agency. She's very smart and eager to help Strike work the investigation. I think she's going to mean more to him than he may have originally thought.

So far I am loving the book! I try to read a few pages everyday when I get home from work. But I expect to get through a lot more over the weekend, especially since we have such great weather! I love laying out by the pool and reading a good book.

If you're reading along with me, thank you! I'm excited to try this virtual book club out and I'm happy to have you along with me for the ride. If you haven't started reading, then go out and get a copy!
