3 weeks from first game, Lamb calls Mercer's depth chart 'a big puzzle'

Mercer coach Bobby Lamb says the 2014 depth chart is nowhere near being set.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Mercer coach Bobby Lamb says the team's depth chart is "a big puzzle."

"Defensively, you've probably got Alex Avant starting at one corner," he says.  "You've probably got Corey Lockett and Tosin Aguebor (at linebacker), and those are about the only three that we can say that are probably going to start on the first Thursday night game.

"On the offensive side, Kirby Southard our center and our left guard Wilson Heres, and of course John Russ the quarterback, are the only three guys probably we can say that are going to be starting on that side of the ball, and maybe JT Palmer at wide receiver.  Other than that, we've got a lot of competition, which makes camp really really fun, because if you miss a couple of reps, you might get behind, so they're really competitive right now."

Three weeks before the season opener, the Bears completed their second two-a-days practice Thursday, hitting the field at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  After a mild start to fall camp, temperatures rose into the upper 90s, but Lamb says his team responded well.

"That's a credit to the work they put in this summer," he says.  "It was awful hot in Macon during the summer.  We had about 40 to 45 young men here, and the work they put in this summer really showed today.  I thought we had a really good day. The heat didn't bother us a whole lot."

Fans are invited to stop by Mercer University Stadium on Thursday, August 14 to check out the Bears for themselves.

"I kind of like to scrimmage two weeks before our first game, and that will be two weeks before our first game," Lamb says.  "So we'll get under the lights and see how we react under the lights."

Mercer opens the season Thursday, August 28 at home against Reinhardt.
