3 Monroe students charged with stealing money from teacher

Three Monroe County high school students are facing criminal charges for allegedly stealing more the $2,000 in cash and checks from a teacher at Mary Persons High School.
FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -- Three Monroe County high school students are facing criminal charges for stealing money from a teacher's desk at Mary Persons High School.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the students stole $1,200 in cash, and $900 in checks that the teacher was collecting for prom expenses.

The three students, who are all 16 and 10th graders at the school, stole the cash and checks on March 6th.

One student is charged with theft by taking, another is charged with theft by taking and giving false statements in a government matter, and the third is charged with destruction of evidence for destroying the checks.

The sheriff's office has recovered about $300 of the stolen cash.

The teens have not had their first appearance in Juvenile Court.
