SAVANNAH, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The Georgia College women's basketball team (16-10, 9-10 PBC) got within three points in the game's final 30 seconds twice against Armstrong Atlantic State University (20-6, 14-6 PBC) before dropping an 86-79 decision Saturday at Alumni Arena. The Bobcats got a good look at their Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament opponent next weekend as the team prepares for postseason play in a rematch against Armstrong.
The Bobcats got off to a bad start as the Pirates got out of the gate with a 14-2 run. Georgia College tried to make a game of it, climbing back to tie the contest in the final two minutes of the first half.
The game may have been decided at the foul line, where Armstrong doubled the Bobcats in point production sinking 22 from the charity stripe at 73 percent as opposed to Georgia College's 11 free throws at 48 percent.
Senior Brandi McKinney (Cincinnati) was the most productive Bobcat, leading the team in points with 23, while also adding seven boards, four steals and three assists.
Junior Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) netted 22 points, while junior Enisha Donley (Loganville, Ga.) added 10. Keys brought her career points total to 1,262 and placed her at No. 5 on the Georgia College all-time points list passing Carla Hull (1985-89).
Senior Thresia Elskamp (Potosi, Wis.) had a good all-around game, leading the team in rebounds with nine and contributing seven points, three steals and three assists.
The Pirates were led by Mauri Wells' double-double, scoring 19 points and adding 16 boards. Armstrong had five double-digit scorers that included Brigitta Barta (26), Tyler Carlson (14), Bryanna Davis (13) and Hanna Bogna (10).
Georgia College finishes its regular season at 9-10 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play and now prepares for a rematch with these same Pirates next week in the PBC Tournament. The Bobcats represent the fourth seed in the West Division, while Armstrong will be the No. 1 seed in the East. The tournament will be played March 6-9 in Columbus, Ga. with game times to be announced.
