MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – Four runs given up in the top of the ninth gave No. 27 UNC Pembroke (12-5, 4-5 PBC) a 9-8 come-from-behind win over No. 29 Georgia College baseball (10-4, 4-2 PBC) Sunday at John Kurtz Field. The Bobcats still took the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) series 2-1, thanks to Saturday's doubleheader sweep.
Just like both of yesterday's ballgames, the Braves took an early lead 3-0 after the top of the second. With UNCP still leading 4-2 into the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats busted open for five runs, getting an RBI double from Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Mich.) as well as an RBI infield single from Rob Hogenkamp (St. Louis) prior to a bases-clearing three-run double from Clay Ardeeser (Loganville, Ga.).
The teams traded runs, entering the top of the ninth at an 8-5 lead for the Bobcats. UNCP got a big two-run double from Max Gagnon to start the scoring, and it was capped by the go-ahead RBI single from Drew Cole. Georgia College got a leadoff single from Daniel Bick (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the bottom half, but couldn't bring him around.
Ardeeser finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Hazel and leftfielder Ryan Sabalaskey (Carol Stream, Ill.) both went 2-for-5 with solo home runs. Hogenkamp finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Bobcat reliever Micah Thompson (Tallapoosa, Ga.) suffered his first defeat in a Bobcat uniform (1-1), while the win went to Brave reliever Alex Britt (1-0) in a scoreless eighth. Patrick McMahon threw the ninth for his first save of the season. Second baseman Daniel Fraga led the UNCP offense with a 4-for-6 day, driving in three and scoring once.
The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, March 4 at 3 p.m., hosting Newberry College.
