Braves' Beachy Won't Make 2013 Debut Tuesday

Written by Associated Press (71) on . Posted in Regional Sports

ATLANTA (AP) - Braves general manager Frank Wren says Brandon Beachy is a little tender and won't make his 2013 debut on Tuesday as had been planned.

Beachy, recovering from elbow-ligament replacement surgery in June last year, made his fifth minor league rehab start on Thursday for Triple-A Gwinnett at Rochester. After giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks in three innings, Beachy was examined by a Braves doctor in Atlanta on Friday.

Wren called Beachy's soreness a minor setback and the team remains confident everything is going to be fine with Beachy's comeback.

Earlier Friday, manager Fredi Gonzalez said Beachy was on track to pitch in Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Georgia freshman cornerback Reggie Wilkerson is facing major surgery on his right knee and will miss the 2013 season.

Wilkerson, from Ocala, Fla., enrolled at Georgia in January and injured his knee in voluntary practices with his teammates this week. He had a procedure on Friday to repair the meniscus in his right knee and will have a second surgery to reconstruct his anterior cruciate ligament. The date for the second surgery has not been announced.

Wilkerson is one of six defensive backs in Georgia's 2013 signing class.

Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson says Wilkerson will have a medical redshirt in 2013 and will have four years of eligibility remaining. Courson says Wilkerson is expected to make a full recovery.

Falcons Sign Second-Round Pick Robert Alford

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - The Atlanta Falcons have signed cornerback Robert Alford, a second-round pick from Southeastern Louisiana.

Alford was the second of two cornerbacks selected by the Falcons in the draft. First-round pick Desmond Trufant remains unsigned.

Alford had 10 interceptions and started 31 games at Southeastern Louisiana. He also returned punts and kickoffs in 2012, taking advantage of his 4.39 speed in the 40-yard dash. He impressed the Falcons with his performance against major college players in the Senior Bowl.

The only other remaining unsigned pick from the Falcons' draft is quarterback Sean Renfree, a seventh-round selection from Duke.
