INDIANAPOLIS - Sam Schmidt Motorsports will partner with AFS Racing to run a second car for the final seven races of the IndyCar season.
The partnership with the No. 17 car sponsored by Automatic Fire Sprinklers. Inc. will begin at the Aug. 7 race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington. A driver will be announced prior to the race.
Rafael Matos ran two races in the No. 17 early in the season, with a best finish of seventh at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Sam Schmidt Motorsports currently runs the No. 77 car driven by Alex Tagliani, who is ninth in the IndyCar standings.
AFS Racing, owned by former open-wheel driver Gary Peterson, won two Indy Lights championships before moving to the IndyCar Series this year with the purchase of two chassis.
