INDIANAPOLIS - Will Power has been fined $30,000 for making an obscene gesture during the IndyCar race at New Hampshire.
Power has the option to work off the fine by making appearances for IndyCar. He also was placed on probation for the rest of the season Thursday.
Director of competition and operations Brian Barnhart has acknowledged he erred when he restarted the Aug. 14 race on a wet track.
Power, trying to catch Dario Franchitti for the series points lead, was knocked out in a crash, but was given fifth place. Before learning that, he flashed two middle fingers at race officials, a scene caught by a television camera. Power later apologized.
In a statement, Barnhart says: "While the circumstances around the checkered flag were highly unusual, they do not justify this type of behavior, especially in a family-friendly environment.
