HAMPTON, Ga. (AMS RELEASE) – Racing returns to the pit lane drag strip at Atlanta Motor Speedway this Friday, Sept. 13 for the Fall Stampede and the return of Friday Night Drags and Show-N-Shine. The Fall Stampede comprises the final two points races of the 2013 drag racing schedule with champions crowned on Friday, Sept. 20.
Over 200 drag competitors are expected to take to the track as the season points battles come down to the wire.
The tightest drag racing battles are in the Pro, Domestic Advanced, Truck and Tuner Class with drivers tied at the top of the point standings. Alan Kidd of Locust Grove and David Craft of McDonough are tied with 24 points each in the Pro Class. In the Domestic Advanced Class, Terry Bates of Locust Grove and Stephen DeFayette of Sharpsburg have each earned 18 points while Jason Kinard of Hollonville is still in the hunt one point behind the leaders with 17. In the Truck Class, Buddy Patrick of Stockbridge and James Ragsdale of Riverdale remain deadlocked with 19 points each. Dustin Ponder of Brooks and Nicolas Feliciano of Griffin are tied at 17 points each in the Tuner Class.
Other close drag racing battles include the Super Pro Class where Bobby Daniel of Stockbridge leads Michael Ramsey of Canton by one point. The Street Modified Class is also separated by one point with Mike Gregory of Riverdale ahead of Kane Shavers of Griffin for the top spot. The battle for the Domestic Class is also stiff as Andrew Morgan of McDonough has notched 21 points to lead the class while Darrell Hallford of Senoia sits three points back with 18 and Jimmy Hunter of Rex is four points out of first with 17.
The Friday Night Drags points system awards four points for a final-round win, three for a runner-up finish, two for drivers losing in their division's semifinal round and a point to all other drivers making a pass down the track during eliminations. In the event of a tie following the final round on Sept. 20, the champion will be determined by virtue of most final-round victories in this season's points events.
Friday Night Drags practice runs begin at 6:15 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. Show-N-Shine car show judging begins at 6:15 p.m. with a track cruise at 8:05 p.m. Drag racing eliminations begin at 9:15 p.m.
All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed minor's release form on file at the speedway prior to competition and forms are available at the speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com/drags.
