Penske To Test Allmendinger In An IndyCar

Written by Associated Press (71) on . Posted in Motorsports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - AJ Allmendinger will test an IndyCar for Penske Racing later this month to see if he can run the Indianapolis 500 for the storied organization.

Allmendinger lost his job with Penske in August when his suspension for failing a random drug test was upheld by NASCAR. He completed in the "Road to Recovery" program and was reinstated in September.

He's not landed a full-time job yet in any series.

Allmendinger won five races in Champ Car in 2006, his final season in open-wheel cars before he moved to NASCAR.

Penske Racing President Tim Cindric says the team is committed to running a third car in the Indy 500 and Allmendinger is a viable option.

Allmendinger would likely run the April race at Barber to prepare for Indianapolis.
