DULUTH, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Mercer senior Hans Reimers posted back-to-back 2-under 70's to lead the men's golf team on the opening day of Georgia State's AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic. As a team, the Bears posted scores of 4-over 292 and 6-under 282 to finish Monday in seventh place on the leaderboard.
South Alabama leads the tournament at 563 while South Florida is second at 564. Host Georgia State (565) is third, Chattanooga (566) is fourth and Mississippi and VCU (572) are tied for fifth. Mercer will begin Tuesday's final round two strokes behind the Bulldogs and Rams for fifth place.
"We had a little letdown in the morning, but I thought that might happen," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "We played a little better this afternoon - I just think we came out a little tight. Overall, we didn't play poorly, just weren't sharp today."
Reimer's back-to-back 70's extended his streak of sub-par rounds to four and has him tied for sixth place individually. Junior Trey Rule next best, finishing the day tied for 38th after improving upon an opening round 74 with a 3-under 69 in the second round.
"Hans didn't even play that great today, but he's developed so much over the past couple years that he can score well when things aren't going right," Bradley said. "He's just a really good, reliable player for us."
Freshman Sean Smothers registered scores of 73 and 75 and is tied for 46th place. Senior James Beale and freshman Emmanuel Kountakis are both tied for 58th with day one totals of 149. Kountakis shot 75 and 74 while Beale collected scores of 80 and 69 on Monday.
"As far as the field is concerned, it's competitive and it's fairly bunched," Bradley said. "If you don't play well you can get passed fast. If we play well tomorrow, we'll have an opportunity to move up the leaderboard."
The final round of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic is scheduled for an 8:05 a.m. start on Tuesday. Live scoring is available at www.Golfstat.com.
