MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Mercer football is almost back! The school hosted its media day Tuesday, and 41NBC was there to get a look at the school's upcoming season.
The Bears have actually been practicing since last year, but now, there's an actual reason for all those long days of preparation.
"We have a game," says Corey Lockett, a redshirt freshman linebacker who played at Northside High School in Warner Robins. "We have a game this year, and a lot of things have changed. The little mistakes that we made back in the fall might seem minute, but right now, they're very large. Small mistakes can get you beat."
"We all know we have a game coming up," says redshirt freshman linebacker Tosin Aguebor, from Johns Creek. "We're more attentive and we want to work harder knowing we have a game coming up so we can try our best to win the game."
It won't be easy to win in the program's first season in seven decades. Head coach Bobby Lamb says with such a young team, it's all about doing the best with what you have.
"We're gonna take the talent that we have at the skill position and certainly try to get the ball to those guys in different ways."
Mercer University Stadium is pretty quiet right now, but in less than a month, more than 10,000 people will fill up the place for the first game in more than 70 years. The best part is: the game sold out in less than 30 minutes.
"The entire community--Macon, middle Georgia, Warner Robins--the whole entire community is behind us," says Lockett. "It feels good to have that fanbase behind us going into the season that we really don't know about. It feels good to know that we're going to have fans here to watch us play."
The Bears start two-a-days Wednesday morning. The 2013 season begins in Macon against Reinhardt on August 31. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
