Convicted UK Grandmother To Appeal Death Sentence

Written by Associated Press (91) on . Posted in Around The World

BALI, Indonesia (AP) - A court official says a convicted British grandmother will appeal the death sentence she received from an Indonesian court for smuggling cocaine worth $2.5 million into the resort island of Bali.

Lindsay June Sandiford was found guilty last week in Denpasar District Court. She was accused of damaging the image of Bali as a tourism destination and weakening the government's drug prevention program.

Court official Gede Ketut Rantam says his office received the appeal request Monday through the head of Kerobokan Penitentiary where Sandiford, 56, is serving her sentence.

Sandiford says she was forced to carry the drugs by a gang that threatened to hurt her children.

Indonesia has very strict anti-drug laws and most of the more than 40 foreigners on its death row were convicted of drug charges.
