ATLANTA - The oldest Egyptian mummy in the Western Hemisphere will be part of an exhibit at Emory University's Michael C. Carlos Museum.
"Life and Death in the Pyramid Age" will run Sept. 10 through Dec. 11. It features the Old Kingdom Mummy, which was acquired by Emory theology professor William A. Shelton during excavations in middle Egypt in 1920.
The mummy is more than 4,000 years old. It is one of about 120 objects from that age in the Emory exhibit. The exhibition will shed light on ancient Egyptian rites and rituals regarding the afterlife.
It also will link to current excavations going on at the site where the mummy was found nearly 100 years ago.
