SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - An Alabama man has been indicted in the slaying of a 29-year-old Army soldier found dead at a campground on Fort Stewart last November. A federal grand jury Thursday indicted 41-year-old Carl Evan Swain of Jasper, Ala., on a federal murder charge in the slaying of Army Spc. John Joseph Eubank. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. attorney in Savannah because Eubank was found dead on Fort Stewart, which is a federal installation.
Swain was arrested on murder charges a month ago at his Alabama home. Authorities did not release the name of the victim until the indictment was returned. The indictment says Eubank was beaten and died from blunt-force trauma to his head. It was unknown if Swain had an attorney. Court records did not name one.
