ATLANTA (AP) - State officials say an apartment complex in Savannah has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said this week the Drayton Arms Apartments was listed because it's one of the earliest and most important examples of International Style architecture in Georgia and the work of a prominent local firm.
The 12-story building at the corner of East Liberty and Drayton streets once held the distinction of being the second tallest building in Savannah and the first building in the state fully air-conditioned. Designed by Cletus W. Bergen and William P. Bergen Architects, it was completed in 1951.
Savannah designated it a local landmark in 2006. State officials say it's become a highly regarded example of modern architecture in Georgia.
