Nearly 600 Storm Grates Stolen From Georgia Roads

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia Department of Transportation officials say thieves have stolen hundreds of metal storm grates from highways throughout metro Atlanta.

Department of Transportation spokesman Mark McKinnon told sourcesthat  the thefts happened within the past three months. Officials say nearly 600 storm grates have been stolen and McKinnon says they can weigh up to 200 pounds and cost up to $500 to replace.

The grates cover deep drainage holes along highways and GDOT officials are concerned that tires could get caught in them, or a person could step out of their car and fall into one.
