ATLANTA (AP) - Some schools closed as a blast of winter weather approached north Georgia, bringing the potential for some ice and sleet. Northeast Georgia appeared to be under the greatest threat of ice-coated roads. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for 10 counties in northeast Georgia, where up to a quarter of an inch of ice was possible.
Several school systems closed Friday. They included Forsyth and Hall County schools in the northeast part of the Atlanta metro area. In Cherokee County, just north of Atlanta, the emergency manager reported a thin glaze of ice mostly on above-ground surfaces. In Forsyth County, Georgia transportation officials reported icy conditions on a state highway bridge. Most of the Atlanta metro area and northwest Georgia were under a freezing rain advisory through 1 p.m. Friday.
