Eastern Black Rhino at Atlanta's Zoo is Pregnant

ATLANTA (AP) - An eastern black rhinoceros at Atlanta's zoo is expecting her first calf.

Zoo Atlanta says 6-year-old Andazi's calf would be the first black rhino calf ever born at the zoo. The father is 8-year-old male Utenzi.

The pregnancy was detected using fecal hormone tests run at Saint Louis Zoo. Gestation in rhinos is 15 months. The zoo's rhinos mated for the first time on May 22, so the zoo is expecting a calf in August or September.

Zoo Atlanta curator of mammals Rebecca Snyder says the zoo is excited about the pregnancy but is remaining cautiously optimistic since it's still early and the calf could be lost.

Rhino calves weigh 50 to 90 pounds at birth and are born without horns.
