Veteran Staffer McMurry Named Georgia DOT Chief Engineer

ATLANTA (GDOT) – Long-time Georgia Department of Transportation executive Russell McMurry has been named the Department's Chief Engineer.  He will Hesucceed Gerald Ross, who retires December 31.

"I am extremely pleased to have selected Russell for this critical position," Georgia DOT Commissioner Keith Golden said after announcing the appointment at a meeting of the State Transportation Board here.  "He brings a wealth of expertise in many disciplines and years of experience in many facets of Department operations."

A native of Hart County, McMurry currently serves as Director of Engineering Services for Georgia DOT.  He previously spent five years as the Department's District Engineer for Northeast Georgia as well as holding several other positions in that region and on the Department's general office staff.

"Following Gerald Ross is no small task," he commented.  "But I feel as though I've spent my entire career preparing for this moment.  I am ready for the challenges and so appreciative of the commissioner and the board giving me this opportunity."

McMurry, a licensed Professional Engineer, has worked for Georgia DOT since 1990.  He is a cum laude graduate of Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering Technology.

Also today, Ross was honored by the Board and Department staff for his 30 years of outstanding service, which included five months in 2009 as interim Commissioner.  "Gerald's professionalism, character, charisma and integrity leave an unmatched legacy at this Department," Board Member Robert Brown noted.
