Environmental Group Seeks To Stop River Discharges

SYLVANIA, Georgia (AP) - An environmental group is asking state officials to force a textile factory to stop discharges into the Ogeechee River.

The nonprofit Ogeechee Riverkeeper filed court papers Tuesday in Screven County Superior Court, alleging that King America Finishing has operated a fire retardant line without a state permit.

Attorney Lee A. DeHihns III, who represents King America Finishing, tells The Savannah Morning Newsm that any effort to affect the company's ability to operate is unacceptable.

Georgia Environmental Protection Division spokesman Kevin Chambers said the agency had not received formal notification of the court filings and declined further comment.

Last month, Georgia environmental officials agreed to conduct a new review of the plant after a massive fish kill last year on the Ogeechee.
