ATHENS, Georgia (AP) - Clarke County sheriff's officials have suspended a deputy accused of violating security procedures when a man pretending to be a retired police officer got into a secure area of the jail to bother employees and rant about politics.
Sheriff's Capt. Eric Pozen tells The Athens Banner-Herald the deputy has been suspended without payfor three days and must undergo remedial training.
A spokesman for Sheriff Ira Edwards said at the time that a serious lapse in security allowed the 50-year-old man into a bond hearing room in the jail in early January.
Witnesses told sheriff's officials they became concerned when the man began making bizarre statements.
Sheriff's officials say he ranted about "the Republican Party one percent," claimed he worked for President Obama and tried to arrest a deputy.
