ATLANTA (AP) - An Atlanta official says the city will reassess its red light camera program after concerns that violations were not mailed to motorists as they are required to be under state law.

CBS Atlanta reports that it found thecity had not properly notified thousands of vehicle owners after cameras captured red light violations. A Georgia law requires the city to send a second violation notice by certified mail if the first notice was not paid.

CBS Atlanta reports that it found more than 15,000 unpaid violation notices were sent to collections without the proper second notice between 2009 and 2011.

Duriya Farooqui, the city's interim chief operating officer, says officials "should have caught it sooner," and the camera program will be reassessed in coming months.
