LINEBORO, Md. (AP) - A fire that destroyed a 160-year-old church in a small town in northern Maryland is under investigation. The two-alarm blaze at Lazarus Church in Lineboro was reported early Tuesday by neighbors. Authorities say nearly 60 firefighters from Maryland and Pennsylvania battled the fire for two hours before bringing it under control. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at $1 million. The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the cause. The church was built in 1853 and served as a place of worship for both the United Church of Christ and Lutheran members. Lineboro is about 30 miles northwest of Baltimore.
