FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) - A government witness says U.S. diplomatic cables leaked by an Army private to WikiLeaks contained five kinds of classified information. The statement by State Department classification expert Nicholas Murphy was read into the record Thursday at the court-martial of Pfc. Bradley Manning at Fort Meade, near Baltimore.
Murphy says most of the cables revealed foreign government information and foreign relations activity. He says a smaller number revealed military information; scientific or economic matters relating to national security; or American vulnerabilities. The cables included candid and sometimes embarrassing assessments of foreign leaders and governments. The anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks published more than 250,000 of them in 2010.
