WASHINGTON (AP) - A government watchdog says budgeting missteps and a lack of financial oversight in the federal Job Corps program led to shortfalls that forced the Labor Department to temporarily halt new enrollments earlier this year.
The department's inspector general issued a report Friday that found Labor officials did not establish a sound budget or spending plan for the program or have a process in place to accurately project spending needs.
Labor officials were forced to turn away thousands of disadvantaged youths from the job training program earlier this year because of a $60 million shortfall. The freeze was lifted in April, but future enrollment is being cut by about 20 percent.
Jane Oates, the assistant Labor secretary responsible for overseeing the program, resigned earlier this month.
