WATERTOWN, Massachusetts (41NBC/WMGT) -- A Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was killed during a shootout late Thursday evening. The two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings are suspected of killing the officer and stealing a car at gunpoint. Law enforcement officials identified Tamerlan Tsarnaev as one of the suspects in the incident. He was killed in the gun battle with police.
The surviving suspect has been identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev 19, of Cambridge. As the search for the second suspect continues, Boston's police commissioner Ed Davis is telling everyone to stay inside their homes.
The incident happened just hours after the FBI released photos of the two men, who were seen carrying backpacks at the marathon on Monday.
The bombings on Monday killed three people and wounded more than 180 others.
