NC inauguration160121 400x225WASHINGTON, DC (NBC News)-- Hundreds of thousands jammed the National Mall Monday for the president's ceremonial second term swearing-in.

In his inaugural address President Obama echoed themes sounded by Lincoln and King.

"While freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by His people here on Earth," Mr. Obama said..

The president urged action on the deficit, global warming and keeping kids safe.

"We reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future," he said.

We can, he said, find a way.

"We are made for this moment, and we will seize it - so long as we seize it together," the president promised.

Many who came were moved.

"Hopefully its kicking off a great second term and a new direction for the country," said Anshu Choudri, who came to Washington from Chicago for the inauguration.

"It is just great seeing all the fellowship and fun," added Morris smith of Virginia.

The traditional bi-partisan lunch gave lawmakers time to chew over the president's call for unity.

Then the Obamas headed for the inaugural parade.

Many in the crowd had waited hours for the prime spots on Pennsylvania Avenue.
