LA Zoo Orangutan Dies at 31

Written by Associated Press (86) on . Posted in Across The Nation

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Zoo says one of its orangutans has died.

Minyak, a 31-year-old male, died from cardiac and respiratory arrest on Thursday.

Zoo officials say he died while undergoing a routine check-up to assess a lifelong chronic respiratory illness called airsacculitis.

Minyak was brought to the zoo in 2001 from Yerkes Primate Center in Atlanta. The zoo offered to care for Minyak despite his medical problems.

The orangutan eventually had surgery and went on to father two females.

The zoo now has seven orangutans.
