The Georgia Department of Transportation announced they will award the city of Macon $1 million to improve TattnallSquarePark, along College Street.
The transportation project will improve safety for the students at Alexander 2 Magnet School, and could also help beautify the area.
"People can walk, they can bike, the children can get to their playground. I'll tell you that was a big thing with me," said Jim Cole.
Cole supports the mission of the College Hill Alliance, to provide better access for downtown, Mercer and the MedicalCenter. When Cole had to select certain projects for the Georgia Department of Transportation grants, the Tattnall Square park improvements just made sense.
"In my process of looking at my 21 counties I had identified this one as one of my top projects. The maximum amount that we're allowed to give is a million dollars and that's the award that we gave to the Tattnall Square, City of Macon, College Hill Corridor Project,” said Cole.
The estimated total cost of the project is $1.375 million dollars. College Hill Alliance executive director Patrick Madison says the project provides a great opportunity for all involved.
"We're going to add a sidewalk along the College Street side. At TattnallSquarePark there will be a raised seating wall. We're going to bring parking on either side of the street," said Madison.
