HAWKINSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - One Hawkinsville Farm is a big provider of peanuts in the southeast and they're trying new products and hoping to bring more jobs along the way.
Boxed, bagged, or boiled...
If there's one thing the Hardy family knows...it's peanuts.
For almost 80 years, the Hawkinsville business has produced tons of them.
Cousins Brad and Ken Hardy say it's the family history of the place that keeps them going strong.
"Literally started selling peanuts off of a back of a wagon in paper bags, plastic bags, whatever people could come up with and it's kind of grown from there," Brad Hardy said.
The farm produces almost five million pounds of peanuts every year.
Summers are extremely important.
Green peanuts are their biggest crop.
"We're able to put up enough peanuts during those 3 months, that we are able to bring them out and boil fresh 12 months out of the year," Hardy said.
Year round you can find Hardy Farms Peauts, affectionately known as 'coutry caviar, in stores across the Southeast.'Sights for the growing business have been set pretty high.
"We're trying to get into the roasted business, we're going to start doing what are called oil roasting peanuts, or party peanuts a lot of people know those as," Hardy said.
"Tens years ago I wouldn't have thought that we'd be in this building here. Two years ago I wouldn't have thought that we'd be roasting peanuts, who knows we may be making peanut butter in the next two or three years," Ken Hardy said.
So the opportunities are endless and so are the job possibilities. With a roasted peanut operation underway means more all because of a peanut.
"I guess to take a peanut and do everything you can with it and get paid for it. I don't know just baby steps. Every year is something different," Ken Hardy said.
Hardy Farms plans on rolling out their roasted brand in the coming months, and they also are looking their peanuts into popular trail mix and protein bar brands as well.
