The Georgia Forestry Commission is conducting a prescribed burn today, and it could bring a lot of smoke to several Middle Georgia communities, including Bibb, Jones, Twiggs, Johnson, Jones, Washington, and Wilkinson Counties.
The fire will take place at the Town Creek Reservoir in Jones County. The goal of the burn is to reduce the amount of rubbish that can fuel forest fires and to improve the habitat for wildlife.

Eight college campuses across Georgia, including 2 here in Middle Georgia, could merge into four to save money.
A merger list is expected to be presented to the state board of regents next week. The proposal would merge Waycross College with South Georgia College; Augusta State College with the Georgia Health Sciences University; Middle Georgia College with Macon State College; and Gainesville College with North Georgia College and State University.
An official statement on the proposal is expected to be made Friday.
The Houston County Sheriff's office is investigating a train accident that killed a pedestrian this afternoon. Authorities were on the scene for several hours collecting evidence. The accident happened at the 800 block of highway 247 in Bonaire.
Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 12 O'clock. According to police, 41 year old Freddie Meek Jr, was walking southbound on the railroad tracks when he was hit by a train. Police say meek was wearing earphones at the time of the accident. Lt. John Holland of the Houston County Sherriff's Office says, he is not sure why the Meek was walking along the tracks. Investigators spoke with several witnesses on the scene to try to figure out what happened.
"He was distracted walking southbound; The train was traveling southbound and actually tried to alert him but he didn't realize they were coming and he was struck and killed on the scene", said Lt. Holland.
According to witnesses, it did not appear that meek saw or heard the train coming. Lt. Holland is calling this a tragic accident.
