This weekend, the best spellers from across Bibb County competed in the district spelling bee, and it was some tough competition.
After 17 rounds, 5th grader Billy Chung of Vineville Academy came out on top, 6th Grader Junus Searcy of Howard middle school came in second, and Edna Rutland from Williams Elementary school came in third.
The top two spellers will represent the district next month at a regional spelling bee at Fort valley State University.
The winning word was VIRTUOSO.
In all, 28 students in grades 4-8 competed at the spelling bee. Along with trophies from Bibb County Association of Educators, the winners received monetary prizes from the men of MASAB Temple #11 Prince Hall Shriners. Edna received $100, Junus received $125, and Billy Chung received $150.
