A new resource center for Macon's homeless is in the works. DePaul USA announced today that it will launch a 175,000 dollar capital campaign for the organization called Daybreak. The money will allow the purchase of a 6,000 square foot warehouse at 174 Walnut Street. The building will also be renovated. Executive Director of DePaul USA says the facility will provide health care, educational services, and recreational services for the homeless. Several churches throughout the city of Macon are helping to fund Daybreak's operations.
Day two of the wild series starts out on solid ground, but quickly takes me 15,000 feet into the sky, for one of the craziest things I have ever done in my life.
I'm not sure what prompted man to think that jumping out of an airplane would be a good idea; but when man began to fly planes, it's likely man began to contemplate that jumping out of that flying plane would be a good idea.
"It's just, you're doing something you're not supposed to do. There's always that element of 'what if'?" David Clark of Skydive Atlanta explains.
The guys and gals who work at Skydive Atlanta, typically jump out of a plane several times a day.
Clark says every jump is different, and every jump is exciting.
"Up there, gravity is no different than it is down here. It's kind of hard to describe...it's exhilarating," Clark says.
So to help put into words the feeling of falling 15,000 feet through the skies, I suited up and left earth for the ride of a lifetime.
It takes seven minutes to climb to our jumping point. With nearly 3 miles of air between me and perfectly solid ground, standing in a doorway of the plane getting ready to jump, suddenly seems like it might not be a good idea...
But I'm committed to bring you the story, so with Clark and I strapped together for my first tandem jump, I take my leap of faith. And screamed like a little school girl, until I couldn't scream any more.
But what a rush.
The free fall lasts about one minute before Clark pulls open the parachute. Once we're floating, it's time to relax and take in the scenery.
The float takes about 10 minutes, and it's actually quite peaceful. It's quiet, calm... and awkward being strapped to another man when you're 10,000 feet above the earth.
But it is unlike any other feeling I've ever experienced in my life. If you've never felt the rush of jumping out of an airplane, it is my suggestion you get out and take the plunge.
Once you do, you've earned the bragging right to say you've taken off in more planes than you've landed.
The case building against Stephen McDaniel in the murder of his neighbor, Lauren Giddings, is getting stronger.
Today, a Grand Jury formally charged the McDaniel on 1 count of murder and 30 counts of sexual exploitation of children. This decision means there is enough evidence for the district attorney's office to head to trial.
McDaniel has been in jail since July 1, on unrelated burglary charges. Murder charges were added in early August after a search revealed hacksaw packing, which was believed to have come from the murder weapon, in McDaniel's apartment.
We're taking a little bit of a different approach in a new series at 41 NBC News.
As a news gatherer for the Middle Georgia community, I wanted to find different type of story; a story about people who do some of the wildest activities for an adrenaline rush.
So began my search for stories appropriately titled, 'Wild With Kyle'.
I sometimes can have a wild personality in the newsroom. So my boss agreed to let me use that, and find five stories from around the state of Georgia of me doing the wildest thing I can find.
Day one takes place in the watermelon fields of Dooly County. Feral hogs have been destroying farmers' crops, and cutting into profits of the harvest.
Hunting a group of wild hogs, is generally too big of a job for just one man, so the boys of Jager Pro Tactical Boar Hunting step in to help. These guys are loaded with .308, semi-automatic rifles. Each gun is equipped with a $14,000 night/thermal vision scope.
They mean business.
Rod Pinkston is the man behind Jager Pro. His mission is to exterminate every feral hog he can find.
"They're (feral hogs) actually considered a pest. And we're doing exactly what the Georgia Department of Natural Resources wants us to do... That's kill as many as possible," Pinkston.
The hunt begins when the sun goes down. Five of us are in the field tonight, each with a gun loaded with 10 rounds of ammo. Pinkston is an ex-Army sniper, so he leads us through the field until we are within 50 yards of the pack of hogs.
"You've got to look at the hog, more like the pest that they are. If you've got termites in your house, don't you want the pest control agent to kill the pregnant termites and the baby termites? A hog is nothing more than a 150 pound termite to a farmer," Pinkston explains.
When Pinkston's countdown hits 'zero', the shooting begins.
When the field is cleared of the hogs, I pulled my head out from behind my rifle, and realized my hands are shaking from the adrenaline pumping through my veins.
The hunt was successful. We've each cleared at least one of the pests from the field.
Our team did not hit every hog we saw in the field. But those we did hit, will go to farmers' families as a source of meat.
Tonight, the Bibb County School District names their "Teacher of the Year." Thiago Aleixo is proud and humble member of the Elam Alexander family. He says he still can't believe he was named the best in Bibb County.
"Just to be nominated is a huge, huge expectation that I didn't see coming."
Lara Sims, Director of Elam Alexander, says there's no one more deserving of the title "Teacher of the Year".
"Children are successful in his room that have not been in any other settings."
