Macon City Council is encouraging the fire and police pension board to take finances into their own hands.
Tonight, Councilman Ed Defore brought a resolution to the Employee Development and Compensation Committee meeting. It's a request for the pension board in charge of fire and police to determine whether or not, it would be possible to increase the retirees monthly benefits by $100 dollars a month.
This decision would be made by an expert analyst appointed by the pension board.
"Chairman Jones made a point towards the end that he really wanted the pension committee to be the one to say, and be the spokesperson for this is economically feasible or not, and as a member of the other pension I agree that is one of the functions of these pension boards," says councilwoman, Lauren Benedict.
This resolution doesn't guarantee an increase for the retirees each month. Chairman of the committee, Charles Jones, says it gives the pension board the option to explore changes in the monthly benefits for retirees.
