The first phase of a new pay scale for county employees passed unanimously tonight at the Bibb County Commission meeting.
The pay scale is expected to begin in March, but only includes county employees. The second phase of the pay scale will take place when the commissioners work on the budget this summer.
The group hopes to work with the city, the Mayor's office, and the Regional Commission to figure out how transferring employees will be paid. Commissioner Hart says the first phase of the pay scale will bring up some of the lowest paid employees.
"More specifically we're looking at deputy sheriff's who we have the lowest in the region and so this will bring us up and put us on par with other sheriff's deputies that are coming in," said Hart.
Commissioner Joe Allen says the county will not pay city employees lower wages than they make now, and he says the city will have to help the county pay for the 142 transferring workers.

The Bibb Co. Commissioners also passed a resolution to take on
The Bibb County Commission took action tonight to make sure the legal battle doesn't drain the bank.
Our understanding of the legislation is that the Secretary's decision is final in terms of the line and the survey. We think continuing to file suits in other parts of the state that requires our attorney to respond to those cost us money," said Hart.
The Monroe County Board of Commissioners say there is not a timeline for the appeal and although they believe there is enough evidence for a case, this type of appeal is rare in court.
