Cassandra Ortiz and Sadie Hayes are best friends and both go to Byron Elementary School. It didn't take long for the girls to form an inseparable bond.
"She always sits beside me at lunch," said Ortiz.
"The first day she sat beside me and we were talking and then became best friends," said Hayes.
Cassandra and Sadie talk a lot and since we're in the heart of the holiday season the girls shared their Christmas wishes with each other. It was during conversation when little Sadie saw a friend in need.
"She said she wasn't having much for Christmas," said Hayes.
Sadie went and told her mom and the two set out to make Christmas magic. Sadie's mom, Joni Vega, called friends and co-workers and collectively they sponsored the Ortiz family.
"We were able to bring a lot for the family. I'm so excited about it and thankful," said Vega.
There are six children in the Ortiz family, ranging from 5 months to 8 years old. With help, Sadie and her mom raised around $700 to make the Ortiz Christmas a little more special this year.
"We bought a bunch of clothes for all the children. One of my friend's jobs donated a lot of toys. We went and got them a few more toys, diapers, all kind of stuff, wipes, but mainly clothes," said Vega.
With presents under the tree and friends close by, the Ortiz family looks forward to a brighter Christmas and it all started with the thoughtfulness of a little girl.
The group also bought the Ortiz family baby diapers and wipes to help offset some of the cost of the little ones.
