Earlier today, a house on the corner of Holt Avenue and East Napier Avenue in Macon was severely damaged by a fire, and the family watched as their home was engulfed by smoke the day after they celebrated a holiday together.
"My thirteen year old was the one who saw the flames," says Ruth Brooks. Her son Sherod warned the family of the fire on Gloria Brooks back porch. He single handedly saved the Brooks family's lives.
"Thank God we had all these people at the house. Seven, eight, nine kids, and three adults, and we all made it out," says Ruth.
Their house wasn't so lucky. "This has been our family's home since I was a kid," says Ruth.
Captain kenny nobles of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department says the flames spread rapidly from the back porch to the attic. It took 10 firefighters to control the blaze.
Even through the smoke, Ruth Brooks can find one reason to be thankful.
"Everybody I love is still safe. Thank God for that."
Captain Nobles says the cause of the fire is still unknown, but it looks like it was accidental. The investigation is on-going.
