Tonight, the Bibb County School District names their "Teacher of the Year." Thiago Aleixo is proud and humble member of the Elam Alexander family. He says he still can't believe he was named the best in Bibb County.
"Just to be nominated is a huge, huge expectation that I didn't see coming."
Lara Sims, Director of Elam Alexander, says there's no one more deserving of the title "Teacher of the Year".
"Children are successful in his room that have not been in any other settings."
This young professional is a Brazilian native, and learned English as a second language. Now, he thrives on challenging young minds.
"I want to make sure my students are receiving a high quality education. I want to make sure my students are building on strength of character. I want to make sure my itty-bitty's are ready for middle school, high school, and college ready as well."
2010 Teacher of the Year, Jadun McCarthy, says there's one quality Aleixo possesses, that set him apart from the rest of the top five finalists.
"Enthusiastic. This year's teacher of the year loves their children. They go above and beyond, and they are dedicated to their children's success by any means necessary."
For Elam Alexander, Aleixo is a gift to his second and third grade students. He's a man whose work goes beyond the four walls of his classroom.
"He touches people deep in their hearts, he takes their children, he loves them like they're his own," says Sims.
Aleixo began his career at Elam Alexander in 2008. When he's not in the classroom, you can find him on the soccer field coaching young athletes.
He will represent Bibb County in the annual Georgia Teacher of the Year Competition. Aleixo says he is honored to be representing his district.
