Investigators are still asking questions about the death of 18 year old Ashton Bartlet. The teen from Hawkinsville was shot and killed early Saturday morning around 3:30 am.
Investigators say 32 year old Birago Blackshear was Bartlet's boyfriend, but her family refer to him as her ex. According to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, he is responsible for killing Bartlet. Her brother says the death of his sister is unbelievable.
"I think I'm still in shock. It still feels like she will come driving up like it's a normal day, but it's not," says Zakery Bartlet
Robert McGriff of the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office says Bartlet was on her way to meet Blackshear at 31 McDuffie St. when the incident happened. Investigators say when she arrived, Blackshear grabbed her from the car and dragged her across the street. That's when, he claims, the gun went off accidentally.
"The understanding I got from her is that he fell on the ground and he slipped, and he was tugging on her and she fell to the ground and she was shot," says McGriff.
Blackshear was charged with murder. Bartlet's brother says the family found out that Blackshear was abusive after his sister's death.
"I never knew that he would be like hitting her, and abusing her and stuff. I mean I always liked the dude. I thought of him as a friend. I never thought he would do anything like this to her," says Zakery Bartlet.
McGriff says Blackshear is being held in a maximum security cell at Pulaski County Detention Center. The investigation is still going on. Blackshear could face additional charges.
