Authorities in are investigating a fatal shooting in Dodge County.
According to Captain Tony Winborn, a three year old Arshontay James was killed at a home at 534 Soperton Highway in Eastman. The child’s body will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) State Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
The Dodge County 911 Center was called to respond at 9:51am. The preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting was accidental. Apparently, another small child inside the home was playing with a hand gun and shot the child.
Investigators say that the gun did not have a lock and wasn't secured.
There were four adults and five children at the home when the shooting happened.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
Sheriff Jeff Hinson reminds citizens that the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office provides gun locks free of charge to the public.
