Milledgeville, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A 2-month-old girl is dead, and police say based on the evidence, her parents are to blame.
According to Detective Scott Goodwin with the Milledgeville Police Department 25-year-old Jessica Driskell, and 27-year-old Tamarus Hartry are charged with "felony murder and cruelty to children in the first degree."
The couple's 2-month-old daughter Makenzie Tamari Hartry was found in her crib when police searched family's apartment home at the River Bend apartment complex.
Major Reggie Hill with the Milledgeville Police Department says it's a tragic incident the community has not seen in a long time.
"It's a sad thing that this event actually occurred, you have a child that hasn't even seen life, and already life has been taken away from them. So, this is a very sensitive matter and it's going to be investigated to the fullest," says Hill.
The incident was first reported early in September, and after following their leads, police made the arrest this past Friday.
"The evidence that we've collected and probable cause led us to make the arrest of the parents," says Hill.
Police describe the scene as a domestic dispute gone wrong.
"Several people where outside, you know, she's a smaller child, so you'd expect a lot of people to be there..." Hill says, "The father was actually outside the front door distraught, crying and the mother...I think she was somewhere in the backdrop with family members."
"This is still an ongoing investigation at this time, and we are pursuing other leads in the case," says Goodwin.
41 NBC's Taylor Terrell reached out to members of both families. Members say they have no comment at this time.
Detectives also added no further details can be released while the case is still under investigation.
The mother and father are currently being held at the Baldwin County Jail without bond.
