MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The city known for soulful Southern music has a new tradition to toast to. Craft beer is here Macon.
"Craft beer is amazing because people put a lot of care into what they do," said Macon's Octoberfest co-organizer Lisa Harris.
There are now plenty of flavors on tap, from Macon Beer Company, a local craft brand to home-grown brewers like C.J. Holmes.
Holmes recently hoped on board the brewing trend. In his garage in Cochran, he now spends hours studying the biology of beer in hopes to create the perfect batch.
"Building, fermentation, steeping grains, adding hops, there's a lot of chemistry to it, even down to the water," Holmes said.
He's entered his ales into several competitions, including Macon's Beer Fest in August and this weekend's Octoberfest. His Jockey Lane Peach IPA won best overall. While the creations are just a hobby for now, Holmes has considered building a business from the suds up.
"I can't keep a full-time job," he said, "and then start on brewery on the side, so we'll see."
