MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Loft living in big cites started as a way to find new use for older buildings. Now it's a trend that's getting more popular in Macon.
Downtown Macon is seeing a big boost in residential interest.
Organizations like Newtown Macon's goal is to bring people to the area, all so they can live, work, and play without having to go to far.
Move – in day can be a long drawn out task for anyone.
Amanda Busch is no exception.
The first year Mercer law student has spent the day moving everything she owns from Athens to a loft in downtown Macon.
She's excited about the new space from the view to the spacious kitchen.
"It's huge and it has granite countertops and a pantry," Busch said.
Loft living is starting to become a trend all over the city.
Developers gut out old industrial buildings like the Dannenberg and renovate them for living spaces, even having room for businesses at street level.
"Every living space in the downtown area is a part of history, it has it's own story and by being a resident of a historical building, you're making yourself a part of that history," Property Manager of the Dannenberg Lofts Christina Ritchie said.
Almost all of them have been leased. The cost can range anywhere from $650 - $1400 a month to get one.
The Lofts at 401 Cherry Street in Macon is completely filled. Development Associate Carol Nelson says the downtown area is attracting a lot of business, making her job to sell lofts a lot easier.
"The social life down here, everything thing to do, the closeness to the colleges, the businesses, bringing people downtown," Nelson said. "It's going to be a true work, play, and live environment."
The downtown area isn't the only place getting into the loft craze.
Planning and Zoning committees have approved more spaces in north Bibb County.
One developer has plans on creating a loft with a rooftop swimming pool for residents and their guests.
For Amanda Busch, she's just happy to get her work done in some peace and quiet without roommates around.
"I think it's a lot easier to study when you don't have a roommate around, especially when it's work intense I guess," Busch said.
