MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As fire crews worked to contain the flames that erupted at a manufacturing plant in Bibb County on Wednesday; many employees worry if their jobs would be salvaged.
Pactiv Advanced Packaging Solutions appears to be a total loss. Majority of the building was gutted after a massive fire started Wednesday morning around 6 a.m. So far, there were no reported injuries. Plant employees watched from afar, feeling like their future was up in smokes.
"I can't believe it," said Martin Terry, a Pactiv material handler.
Terry, a father of six, has been at the plant for 15 years. He was inside of the building when it all started.
"I was leaving work thinking that it's under control and then getting home to find the building burned down it's a hurting feeling," Terry said.
As the battle of the blaze continued there was a blast. Numerous explosions went off throughout the day off of Airport Drive. Parts of the building collapsed, bricks hit the ground and debris filled the air. Macon-Bibb Fire crews worked around the clock in a blanket of smoke.
"It became a little too dangerous for us," said Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Marvin Riggins, "we pulled Pactiv employees out of the building."
The plant is no stranger to sparks. Crews have responded to fires at the building numerous times but nothing of this magnitude. The building that recycles paper into egg cartons is often a breeding ground for blazes. Connie Taylor, a retired Pactiv employee, said they typically spark when the cartons are heated up.
"You will see one smolder," Taylor said, "and the next thing you know, the whole place is up in flames."
